So, what are the Yellow Ribbons all about?
Local residents have tied these yellow ribbons to trees along the Boreenmanna Road to raise awareness of National Transport Authority (NTA) proposals to remove up to 191 trees along the route between Mahon and Cork city.
We are in favour of improved public transport and generally support the NTA aspirations for same, however, if the current NTA proposals are implemented, the beautiful trees you see around you right now, will be cut down. This will be a travesty for the environment as well as a huge loss to the local community.
Representatives from various Residents Associations on the Boreenmanna Road are working together and are actively engaging with the NTA to offer alternatives to their current proposals, which we feel do not meet the needs of the local community and do not adequately address concerns about the environment, health, safety and general well-being of local residents.
Let's just say we can think of better ways to spend some of the €600 million which has been earmarked for this work.
We thank you for your interest in our local community, and hope that you have found this information helpful. We encourage you to participate in the next round of public consultations in 2023.
We plan to post updates here when they become available, so please feel free to check back in periodically.
People who will not sustain trees will soon live in a world that will not sustain people. |
